On Saturday 6th May, staff from Film & Screen studies at the University of Brighton will present 'The Cult in Screen Culture' from 6.30pm in the Sallis Benney Theatre:

The term 'cult' is an extremely imprecise and contested category. Precisely what constitutes a 'cult' film is, like many generic lables, hard to identify. A combination of production, text, and fan activity, there is little in terms of content to connect 'Plan 9 from Outer Space' (1959), 'Pink Flamingos' (1972) and 'The Shawshank Redemption (1994). Nevertheless, the term 'cult' seems appropriate to all three. This talk from the University of Brighton's Film & Screen Studies degree team examines different kinds of cult media, the process by which media achieve cult status, and the kinds of media which are excluded from the category.
