Introduction by Colin Ford - Grace Robertson was born in Manchester in 1930. Between the ages of 19 and 27 she worked as a freelance photojournalist contributing often to publications such as Picture Post. She went on to work freelance for Life magazine. The style she developed in the early 1950’s was both profuse and energetic and constituted of sets and series rather than of the composed single pictures which had been photojournalism’s stock in trade up to then. Her interest in documenting the lives of working women in the 1950’s also singles her out as a pioneer and precursor. Her book "A Sympathetic Eye" offers a fascinating look at a selection of Grace Robertson’s works spanning from 1948 to 2001.
