Course Description

Background: The GMC (GMC Recognising and Approving trainers: the implementation Plan 2012) requires all clinical and educational supervisors to be accredited as trainers by their local Educational provider (LEP) by July 2016. The criteria for accreditation is based on the GMC standards for trainers as set out in The Trainee Doctor, the 2009 edition of Tomorrow’s doctors and the seven domains in ‘A framework for the professional development of postgraduate medical supervisors’ developed by the Academy of Medical Educators (AoME).  This course aligns completely with the above standards and the seven domains.

Course Leads:

Dr Julia Montgomery will be the lead for this course. She has a Masters in Clinical Education, teaches on the BSMS and University of Sussex Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education, runs the successful BSMS Teacher Support Courses and undertakes research in medical education around undergraduate professional development using the eportfolio. She has also undertaken interprofessional research in compassion training. She is a retired Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology from BSUH and now works full time within the Division of Medical Education at BSMS supporting the development of teachers using new eLearning and innovative methodology such as the flipped classroom approach to teaching.

Mr Varadarajan Kalidasan is a Consultant Paediatric surgeon and urologist at the Royal Alexandra Children's Hospital (BSUH). He is also the Director of Education and Knowledge at Brighton and Sussex University Trust leading a multi-professional education team over seeing the quality assurance of training within BSUH. Mr Kalidasan is also involvement within the medical school sitting on the Professionalism, Performance and Progress committee and the Academic Board of the Brighton and Sussex Medical School. Mr Kalidasan educational research interest has been Ethics Education in post-graduate medical training and he was awarded a Masters in Professional Research by the University of Brighton for the work he has carried out in this area.

Speakers: This course will use the expertise of members of the Brighton & Sussex Medical School (BSMS) Division of Medical Education, Brighton & Sussex University Hospital (BSUH), HEKSS Heads of Schools and NHS clinical staff who have completed an MA in Medical Education across the KSS region and other invited speakers.
